Jahnu Barna is one of Assam`s best-known directors and has produced a number of remarkable films- Aparoop (1982), Papoori (1986), Hkhagaroloi Boho Door (It is a Long Way to the Sea, 1994). His Haldhia Choraya Baodhan Khai won the Golden Lotus in India in 1988 and the Grand Prix for best film and best actor at Locarno.
1986 - Papori: The film starred Biju Phukan, Gopi Desai, Sushil Goswami, Dulal Roy, Runjun, and Amulya Kakoti. A man falsely accused of murder, his dying daughter tended to by his wife, the rape of the wife, the honest policeman stymied by political corruption - a grim story relieved only by the epilogue that speaks of the eventual justice for the accused and the policeman`s promotion. The film was set in the year 1983 during the All-Assam Students` Union turbulence.
1987 - Halodiya Choraye Baodhan Khaye: The film starred Indra Bania, Purnima Pathak Saikia, Badal Das, Hemen Choudhury, and Pabitra Kumar Dekha. A poor farmer is cheated of his land, and after being reduced to selling his cattle, he approaches the bureaucracy for help in regaining his land. Finally, one honest official comes to his aid. Indra Bania`s performance as the hapless farmer is an acclaimed one.
1989 - Banana: The film starred Mridula Barua, Sushil Goswami, Bishnu Khargoria, Golap Datta, Lakshmi Sinha, Munim Sharma, Jyoti Bhattacharya, and Shasanka Debo Phukan. The conflict between the tribals and the illegal timber merchants/contractors - the forest ranger finally succeeds in convincing the tribals of the need to defend their land. The film represents the theme closest to Jahnu Barua`s heart : the individual versus the powerful corrupt.
1994- Hkhagaroloi Bohu Door: The film starred Bishnu Khargaria, Susanta Barua, Arun Nath, Kashmiri Saikia Barua, and Mrinal Quddus. The film is in two parts as it were - the first relates the old ferryman`s encounter with his son`s greed, the second with the construction of a bridge over the river and his subsequent loss of livelihood. Uniting both is his warm relationship with his grandson.
