An Icon, master of the medium when it comes to portraying the decisive and illuminating moment or event - Mrinal Sen reveals a profound understanding of the human predicament.
1969 - Bhuvan Shome: The film starred Suhasini Mulay, Utpal Dutt, Sadhu Meher, and Punya Das. The transformation of an uptight officer through the attentions of a woman who is the wife of a man he has fired. As inhibitions disappear, he worries about his lack of control. Sen held that the conclusion made sense if `you grant Mr Shome a certain touch of insanity.` The film was successful and is regarded as the first of the New Indian Cinema genre.
1979 - Ek Din Pratidin: The film starred Mamata Shankar, Satya Bannerjee, Geeta Sen, and Sreela Majumdar. - A young woman - the sole earning member of her family - fails to return from work till next morning. As each family member worries, the concern is for themselves. Nobody questions her upon her return and they revert easily to their routine- as if denying the evening and the night.
1982 - Kharij: The film starred Anjan Dutt, Mamata Shankar, Indranil Moitra, and Sreela Majumdar. A servant boy is locked in the kitchen and he dies of carbon monoxide poisoning. The police investigation reveals the callousness of the couple who employed him as well as of the neighbours. Similar to Ek Din Pratidin, nobody is willing to step beyond their selfishness.
1983 - Khandar: The film starred Shabana Azmi, Naseeruddin Shah, and Rajen Tarafdar. - A young woman lives with her elderly mother in a ruined property. The mother mistakes a stranger for her daughter`s fiance, and believing he has returned, she dies content. The daughter however knows that her fiance has deserted her. The strangers leave, and the young woman is left alone in the lonely ruins.
1988 - Ek Din Achanak: The film starred Shriram Lagoo, Uttara Baokar, Shabana Azmi, Aparna Sen, Roopa Ganguly, and Anil Chatterjee. When the head of a family vanishes without warning or word, the family waits, trying to conjure up the person through their memories. He remains a mystery. This was believed to be an autobiographical film.
1993 - Antareen: The film starred Anjan Dutt, Dimple Kapadia, Deepti Roy, Amal Mukherjee, and Satya Bandhopadhyay. - A writer in search of inspiration, a woman in search of herself, and their telephone conversations. They remain strangers - but she recognizes his voice in a chance encounter in a train.
