S.Shankar
S.Shankar has made blockbuster Tamil movies which have social themes and are also entertaining, making them a right combination for commercial success. He is credited with delivering expensive, visually beautiful action movies and the use of latest visual technology in his movies. Most of his movies from Tamil are dubbed into other languages especially Telugu and Hindi.

Some criticize him for the overdose of gimmicks in his movies and consider him as a sensational entertainer than a serious director. His directorial career began with the film Gentleman (1993) with Arjun playing the lead role, which was a Mega hit. His next film was Kadhalan which was again a mega hit. This was followed by Indian with Kamal Hassan in the lead role. This was a grand success all over India. It was dubbed in Hindi as Hindustani. It was the Indian entry for the Academy Awards. His project Anniyan has featured most cameras used for a shot in Indian cinema.

  • 1993 - Gentleman: The film marked S. Shankar`s debut in film, and with the highest budget for an Indian film in 1993, became a blockbuster upon release. It starred Arjun and Madhoo in the lead roles. A story of modern day Robin Hood who takes from the rich to provide education for the poor. Kicha is a respected person in his local community and runs a small business. But Kicha, unknown to anyone, is a notorious robber. Charan Raj is an efficient Police officer who takes charge to nab Kichaa. And after a lot of hide-and-seek games, Charan Raj arrests him. Kicha revelas in the court, the reasons of his Robinhood Avatar with a very strong flashback.


  • 1994 - Kadhalan: This movie starred : Prabhu Deva, Nagma, Vadivelu, S. P. Balasubrahmanyam, Raghuvaran, Girish Karnad. This film was a huge commercial success upon release. With well received performances from a cast that also included Girish Karnad and Raghuvaran, this film displayed actor/dancer Prabhu Deva`s dance moves and acting which, along with the direction and music, were hugely popular aspects of the movie. It is basically a poor boy meets rich girl kind a story but in here the hero is a son of a police constrable and he is in love with the corrupted governor`s daughter and the story revolves around with the characters backed by beautiful scenes and music this film was way ahead of its time when released and can still enjoy watching it.


  • 1996 - Indian:Indian The film stars Kamal Haasan, Manisha Koirala, Urmila Matondkar, Goundamani, and Senthil. The film was later released in Hindi as Hindustani. Senapathy, a veteran freedom fighter, is angry. He is angry against the rampant corruption at every level of the bureaucracy. He will clean it up at any cost. A vengeful Senapathy decides to teach corrupt officials a lesson - a lesson that will serve to remind other corrupt officials to do their work diligently without accepting any bribes. What Senapathy does not know is that his very son Chandra is now part of this system - and he must now make up his mind to make an exception or carry on his gruesome task - knowing fully well that the Central Bureau of Investigation is hot on his tail. The film has won the 1997 National Film Awards and also the Best Actor Award to Kamal Haasan.


  • 1998 - Jeans: JeansThis movie starred the eternal beauty Aishwarya Rai, along with Prashanth, Lakshmi, Nassar, Raju Sundaram, S.V.Sekhar, Senthil, Raadhika & Geetha. The story of Jeans is that of a disapproving father in the path of love. Nachiappan is estranged from his twin brother. He himself has two twin sons. The naive, NRI father wants his offspring to marry only twin girls due to the circumstances which caused him to separate from his own brother. Through a series of completely implausible events, one of the twin sons falls in love with Madhumita, who has come to the USA for her grandma`s brain tumour operation. When Nachiappan declares that he would marry his sons to twin girls only, Krishnaveni fibs that Madhumita also has a pair of twins. When Nachiappan and his sons travel to India to meet the other girl, Madhumita begins to pose as Vaishnavi, the second twin. Jeans won the Filmfare Best Movie Award South in the year of its release.


  • 1999 - Mudhalvan:Mudhalvan The film stars Arjun, Manisha Koirala and Raghuvaran. This film was a tremondous success at the box office and continued Shankar`s dream run. It won the Filmfare Best Movie Award South in the year of its release. It was also done in Hindi as Nayak.


  • 2005 - Anniyan: It is the first Indian movie to be dubbed into French and then released worldwide in French-speaking countries. Further more Anniyan was dubbed to Hindi as Aparichit which performed averagely, considering the movie came from the southern part of the country. The movie stars the actors Vikram, Prakash Raj, Sadha, and Vivek. The film was the most expensive Tamil feature film made costing Rs.26.38 crores. AnniyanAnniyan is the story of Ramanujam "Ambi" Iyengar, a brahmin lawyer. His constant habit to be perfect in rules and honesty leads him to develop a Multiple Personality Disorder in which a new character in him grows as anniyan. Ambi (a lawyer), Remo(a suave supermodel) and Anniyan (a vigilante who wreaks havoc on people who cheat, loots or conned Ambi).
